The San Francisco Ballet's artistic director, Helgi Tomasson, will choreograph a new production of "Swan Lake" for the 2009 season, which also will be marked by the company's premiere of Antony Tudor's 1936 "Jardin aux Lilas."
Three works created for the company by Mark Morris — "A Garden," "Joyride" and "Sandpaper Ballet" — will be revived in a single program. The company's repertory season, announced today, will run Jan. 27-May 9, following the traditional opening-night gala performance Jan. 21.
The company's "Nutcracker" returns before the repertory season for 31 performances Dec. 11-28, 2008.
Tomasson last created a production of "Swan Lake," to Tchaikovsky's familiar score, in 1988. His new production will open Feb. 21, with new scenery and costumes by European designer Jonathan Fensom, who is best known for Broadway revivals.
Tudor's "Jardin aux Lilas" (Lilac Garden) also is being performed by New York's American Ballet Theater this year to mark the 100th anniversary of the choreographer's birth. The season also will include revivals of six works from the ballet's current New Works Festival.
The company will give 56 subscription performances during the season at the War Memorial Opera House. Subscription ticket packages, ranging from $30 to $3,680, are now available. Single tickets, at $25-$250, go on sale in November. For information, contact 415-865-2000 or www.sfballet.org.
