Bougainvillea is available in many colors and is growing in popularity throughout California. You can choose from white, pink, rose, purple, red and lots of shades in between.
Bougainvillea can give your home a tropical or Mediterranean feel, but success in growing it depends on where you live. Even neighbors may find they get different results depending on those crazy Bay Area microclimates. In Southern California, the vine is an evergreen. In Northern California, it often goes dormant because of cold weather. If you want to try bougainvillea in your garden, pick a hot spot. Use a southern or western facing wall so it will benefit from the reflected heat.
And you may want to go easy on the watering. Heavy watering produces lush growth, but the flowers will be less vivid. You can remedy this by watering less during the long blooming period.
